The BioChain Founds the Applied Livestock Consortium

The BioChain founded Applied Livestock, an integrated consortium of specialists in animal health, data science and infrastructure formed to address livestock systems challenges that no single discipline can resolve alone.

The most significant problems in livestock don’t sit neatly within a single domain — they emerge at the intersection of biology, data and operational systems, and solving them takes coordinated expertise rather than a single vendor or a single point of view. The BioChain founded Applied Livestock to bring that expertise together, providing the data backbone underneath it: the infrastructure that lets the consortium’s work operate with confidence in data integrity, aligned with GxP and ALCOA++ principles.

Who we’re working alongside

Applied Livestock convenes five specialist organisations. Three in particular bring decades of domain authority that make this consortium more than the sum of its parts:

Arpexas brings fifty years in international livestock medicine. Its Founding Director established SEBI-Livestock at the University of Edinburgh, chairs the ILRI Board of Trustees, and formerly led European Vaccine R&D at Pfizer Animal Health — direct relationships with the funders and institutions that define global livestock development.

Mujika contributes scientific leadership across One Health, epidemiology, and the policy infrastructure that shapes how animal health systems are designed and evaluated, drawing on three decades spanning farm practice, international development and senior government surveillance roles.

Perseptum applies AI for healthcare to livestock systems, combining deep veterinary domain knowledge with AI methodology backed by more than 3,000 research citations and active collaborations through the vHive Incubator at the University of Surrey.

Alongside them, Polar Networks contributes twenty years of government-grade network and cyber security infrastructure applied to the realities of distributed agricultural systems.

Three areas of integrated capability

Within the consortium, the work spans livestock health and disease intelligence — surveillance systems, epidemiological modelling and early warning frameworks; productivity and system optimisation — data-driven performance improvement connecting insight to operational change; and traceability and data infrastructure, where The BioChain’s role sits directly.

This is also where our own HerdWare work connects: the same data-integrity infrastructure underpinning Applied Livestock’s consortium work is what HerdWare is built on for on-farm biosecurity and regulatory reporting.

Questions & Answers

What is Applied Livestock?

Applied Livestock is an integrated consortium of specialists in animal health, data science and infrastructure, formed to address livestock systems challenges that no single discipline can resolve alone.

What role does The BioChain play in the consortium?

The BioChain provides the data backbone underneath the consortium’s work — infrastructure supporting data integrity aligned with GxP and ALCOA++ principles, so the consortium’s traceability and data work can operate with confidence.

How does this relate to HerdWare?

The same data-integrity infrastructure underpinning Applied Livestock’s consortium work is what HerdWare is built on for on-farm biosecurity and regulatory reporting — this is existing, tested work, not a new capability.

Who are the other consortium members?

Arpexas, Mujika and Perseptum bring decades of domain authority across international livestock medicine, One Health and epidemiology, and AI for livestock health respectively. Polar Networks contributes government-grade network and cyber security infrastructure.

Where can I find more detail on the consortium?

If your organisation generates, manages, analyses or governs biological evidence and would be interested in participating in a UK or European provenance demonstrator, The BioChain would welcome the conversation.
